The Detroit Auto Show is getting an upgrade in 2020. This iconic event in the Motor City is switching from being held in frosty January to much milder June. According to the Executive Director of the North American International Auto Show, this change will “provide a fresh international platform” and allow Detroit to “continue to be a global stage for some of the world’s most significant and iconic vehicle reveals and host an unparalleled international audience of media and key industry influencers.”
Historically, the Detroit Auto Show has always been a big draw to the city, attracting brands and attendees from around the globe. In recent years, however, the event has declined in popularity, with many luxury manufacturers pulling out of the show in favor of more tech-focused venues like the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Some companies have even turned to hosting their own exclusive unveilings.
By changing the Detroit Auto Show Date in 2020 to the late spring, officials are hoping to bring new life to the event.
Detroit Auto Show 2020 Will Be One for the Books
More than just helping people escape the cold, organizers are hoping that the season change will bring back both crowds and vendors. The core of the Detroit Auto Show will still take place in the recently renovated Cobo Center, but the warm weather offers opportunities to expand the event around the rest of the city as well.
Although not yet set in stone, there has been talk of possible activities and vehicle showcases in places like Campus Martius Park, the Detroit Riverfront, Spirit of Detroit Plaza, Hart Plaza, and more. Outdoor events might include:
- Dynamic Vehicle Debuts
- Ride and Drives
- Autonomous/Automated Driving
- Off-Road Challenges
Take Advantage of the Many Things to do in Detroit

Walk along the river, check out one of Downtown Detroit’s multiple breweries, grab a drink in The Belt alley, or wander around Capitol Park or Campus Martius.
